Hike details

When: Sunday, May 5, 2024
Time: 8:30 am – 12:30 pm
Where: Ventura River Preserve
Length: 4.5 mi (450’ elevation gain)
Difficulty: Moderately Strenuous

Join OVLC Docents Barb and Mike Rugo on Sunday, May 5 for a docent-led hike on the Ventura River Preserve. This 4.5 mile hike will travel along the southwest side of Oso Ridge to Allan Jacobs, Fern Grotto, Wills Canyon, and West River Trails. We will meet at 8:30 am at the OVLC office (address, directions, and gate code provided with confirmation) to carpool into the starting point in Rancho Matilija. We plan to return to the departure point by approximately 12:30 pm. Along the way, you will be treated to beautiful views of the preserve, river, and valley while pointing out some of the most prominent wildflowers like the hummingbird sage and even an unusual sighting of watercress! There will be two small stream crossings that are shallow (not the main river). This is a great opportunity to explore several sections of different trails on this preserve with experienced guides and fellow hikers.

This hike is appropriate for ages 12 years old and up and we request no dogs please. Please wear closed-toe shoes, boots and pants recommended, and bring sun protection, water, and snacks. Hiking poles are recommended, but not necessary, for some slopes, rocky terrain, and slippery footing. Space is extremely limited and we often have a waitlist for these hikes. If you receive a spot, we ask that you please attend, or if you are unable to make it, you contact us 48 hours in advance in order to offer your spot to someone else.

Please email Claire Woolson at claire@ovlc.org to RSVP. Please specify the hike you are RSVPing for along with the number of people in your party.
