Ojai Meadows Preserve

> BRIEF HISTORY OF THE OJAI MEADOWS PRESERVE

> MAP OF THE OJAI MEADOWS PRESERVE [ 192 Kb ]

The Preserve is comprised of 58 acres of Valley and Live Oaks, grasslands and wetlands. It is one of the last remaining grasslands on the east side of the Ventura River with extensive views of the surrounding Los Padres National Forest. The Preserve is connected to three other oak woodlands properties that the Conservancy is attempting to protect. Ultimately, the Conservancy's goal is to protect critical wildlife corridors between the Preserve and the Ventura River and San Antonio Creek. The area has been heavily disturbed by humans in the past, but the Conservancy has begun the process to restore and expand the wetland, plant oaks and reintroduce native grasses.  This long term project will provide better habitat for birds of prey, wetland birds, and other wildlife species. In 2000, graduate students from the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at UC Santa Barbara have designed a preliminary restoration plan which will be the basis for a more complex study of the opportunities and challenges offered by the restoration effort.  In partnership with the Ojai Valley Unified Schools, the Conservancy will work to restore historical water flows to the Preserve, restore wetlands, reduce present flooding on Highway 33 and acquire a 14-acre addition to the Preserve. This will also allow the School to improve public safety and access to existing ball fields during the winter rainy season. For more information visit our CURRENT PROJECTS page.

Education programs about the restoration effort and the site's natural history occur throughout the year. Presently, monthly bird walks are lead by Conservancy volunteers and hundreds of local students use the Preserve as an outdoor classroom under the leadership of our Education Coordinator.  See the EDUCATION page for more information. Nordhoff High School students participate in a field science classes and will have 'hands-on' opportunities to help with the restoration effort.

Walking trails are open to the public during daylight hours. These paths are enjoyed by hikers and bicyclists. Dogs are welcome as long as they are on leashes. "Mutt Mitts" are available at the Nordhoff and Lomita Avenue entrances for picking up after your dog. The site is also used by bird watchers, artists and others seeking a break from urban life.

These properties were acquired through a $1.35 million dollar capital campaign during 1999 and 2000. Over 70% of the funds came from 140 local organizations and individuals. A portion of the money raised was set aside for the care and protection of the site.  These funds are used for many important projects, including: limiting access of motor vehicles, habitat restoration and fire prevention. Naming right opportunities to honor family, friends or mentors are still available for a wide range of donations. Please Click here to find out more. Or call the Conservancy for more information.
